Recently i have been getting my hands dirty with gardening, and i have had a lot of experiences with it, so i was thinking about sharing my experience. I have tried growing a variety of plants however i haven’t had much success in growing them.
I started out by growing seeds which were pre-packed. I took a sapling tray and filled it with soil which you can find anywhere, basically ground soil. I watered them in regular intervals and i made sure to give them proper sunlight. Water, carbon dioxide and sunlight were all the main components which a plant needed to photosynthesis (The process in which carbon dioxide reacts with water to produce oxygen and energy in plants). After a week or two i came to check if any sapling had sprouted or started to germinate. To my dismay none of them had sprouted. I also observed that for some reason the soil was very hard and had cracks in them.
After my first fail, i tried a second time, i cut open a few chillies and carefully extracted the seeds from the vegetable. I dried the seed with a paper towel and then filled a large pot with a bag of soil. They were treated the same as my last batch, with adequate water and sunlight, i didn’t need to provide it co2 as Air naturally consists of co2. After 5 days i was happy to see that they had started to germinate, i learned from a few videos that the seeds should be moist most of the time as if it is too dry germination wont take place and it shouldn’t be too wet or else the plant will suffocate as there wont be many air pores for the roots to breathe. They started growing out nicely until the next week. I came to see that most of the leaves had been eaten by pests. I started removing the dead saplings and then i dug up the soil. The soil was very similar to my last batch, i later found out that there are 3 types of soil, silt soil, sand soil and clay soil. I realized that i was using clay soil, the reason why clay soil isn’t optimal is that it has poor drainage of water, and there are very few air pores for the roots to breathe, and clay soil hardens up when it dries up, both of my batches showed 2 of these symptoms.
I tried once more using pre-packed seeds and silt soil this time. What shocked me was that they germinated within two days. These were cucumber plants. They showed excellent results, they grew up to 1 foot long. I had planted three out of which 2 had survived for over 15 days. After some time i added some compost to the soil as one of them showed malnutrition symptoms. Over the next 5 days 1 plant had died and the upper half of the last one was completely missing. I figured i had either mixed too much compost or pests had eaten them again.
After three failed attempts i set out to get at least one successful attempt. I used proper gardening soil along with a mix of other soils and a bit of compost. I felt like this was the best soil as it showed perfect results. It had good water drainage, it had lots of minerals which made it fertile, it also had air pores and it felt very soft and smooth. This time i used different seeds, i tried it on beans and radish. I also watered them a bit less than my other attempts as this retained some water. I left them under the shade which was my only problem. They all started growing towards the sunlight which made them tilt rather than being rooted upright. This was my only problem, other than this everything worked out perfectly. I transplanted them into bigger pots and now they have grown quite big. They are now available for purchase at https://greenorchid.co.in/ .
